Business intelligence software developers proved the viability of their business in slow economic times with mostly improved earnings reports this week.

Hyperion Solutions Corp. saw revenues increase to $126 million in its fiscal second quarter ended Dec. 31, up from $118.9 million in the same period the previous year. License revenues led the way, up from $46.2 million to $51.1 million.

The higher revenues enabled Hyperion to increase its net income as well, as the Sunnyvale, Calif., company turned a profit of $7.6 million, up from $3.7 million in the same period the previous year.

Hyperion increased its license revenues through the indirect channels to 27 percent of its total revenues, up from 24 percent in the previous fiscal second quarter. The company ultimately wants to drive a third of its business through the channel, Hyperion officials said.

Hyperion added 165 new customers in the quarter, accounting for 35 percent of its license revenue. Platform licenses generated 55 percent of revenue, with application licenses making up the other 45 percent.
