The White House East Room has seen its share of history, but it just hosted its first guest made of metal and silicon.
First Lady Melania Trump made headlines Wednesday when she was joined by a sleek, black-and-white humanoid robot named Figure 03. The pair walked side by side down the red carpet before the robot took center stage to address an audience of first spouses from around the world.
“Thank you, First Lady, Melania Trump, for inviting me to the White House,” the robot said. “It is an honor to be at Fostering the Future Together’s global coalition inaugural meeting.”
The robot then introduced itself: “I’m Figure 03, a humanoid built for the United States of America. I am grateful to be part of this historic movement to empower children with technology and education.”
After its brief remarks, the robot offered greetings in nearly a dozen languages other than English before walking back down the hall. The First Lady smiled and acknowledged her mechanical guest.
“It’s fair to state: you are my first American-made humanoid guest in the White House,” Mrs. Trump said.
The appearance was part of a two-day summit for the First Lady’s “Fostering the Future Together” initiative, which focused on AI education and child safety. Mrs. Trump shared a vision where robots move beyond our screens and into our physical world to help humans.
“The future of AI is personified. It will be formed in the shape of humans. Very soon, artificial intelligence will move from our mobile phones to humanoids that deliver utility,” she said.
She specifically pitched the idea of robots becoming teachers.
“Imagine a humanoid educator named ‘Plato.’ Access to the classical studies is now instantaneous — literature, science, art, philosophy, mathematics and history — humanity’s entire corpus of information is available in the comfort of your home,” she added.
What is Figure 03?
While the First Lady sees the robot as a future teacher, its creators at Figure AI designed it for much more practical tasks. In company videos, the robot has been seen folding clothes, loading dishwashers, and picking up toys.
Here are the quick facts on the hardware:
- Manufacturer: Figure AI (based in Sunnyvale, California).
- Cost: Approximately $24,760 — about the price of a new Honda Civic.
- Tech: It uses an AI model called “Helix” to solve problems and respond to voice commands.
- Design: It features cameras in its hands and tactile sensors to help it “feel” and “see” objects.
Brett Adcock, the founder of Figure, celebrated the event on X, stating: “So proud to see F.03 make history as the first humanoid robot in the White House.”
Safety and the road ahead
Despite the excitement, Mrs. Trump included a warning about the rapid pace of technology. She noted that “The safety of our next generation is always paramount.”
Currently, Figure AI does not have active contracts with the federal government, though the administration has reportedly looked into similar robots for military use. For now, Figure 03 remains a high-tech domestic assistant that just happened to have its coming-out party at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.
