As with last Aprils reductions, cuts on July 9 were applied to the companys dual-core Athlon 64 X2 processors, all of which now fall in the sub-$200 range, as well as the Athlon 64 FX-70 series.

For instance, the Athlon 64 X2 6000+, AMDs top-of-the-line model, now retails for $178 with the lower-end 4200+ and 4000+ models falling to $89 and $73, respectively.

AMD appears to have discontinued the 3800+ and 3600+ models altogether.

During its last microprocessor pricing update in April, AMD singled out the Athlon 64 FX and Athlon 64 X2 microprocessors as well.

The fastest Athlon 64 X2 processor, the 3.0-GHz 6000+, was previously priced at $241, slightly more expensive than Intels midrange E6400, a 2.13-GHz chip that sells for $224. Now at $178, its now significantly cheaper, though Intel too is expected to cut select CPU prices before Barcelona, AMDs quad-core microarchitecture, is released.

In a somewhat perplexing move, the two ultra-high end AMD Athlon 64 FX-70 processors, the FX-74 and FX-72, are now priced exactly the same—both at $599 according to AMDs processor pricing page.
