The latest iMac Software update, 1.1, is causing random operating system freezes, requiring restarts, the company conceded Oct. 8, but users will have to wait for the end of October for relief.

An Apple representative confirmed to eWEEK that it recognized an issue affecting some of the companys latest “aluminum” iMacs, introduced in August, but a software update to resolve the issue wont be coming until “later this month.”

Affected users began reporting the problem in a pair of thread on the support pages of Apples Web site. Some hypothesized that the cause is related to 3D graphics hardware and drivers, given that the freezes often appear when users are playing 3D games or using other applications that stress the graphics chip set.

Apple, however, would not confirm that theory or offer its own speculation. Some of the models are equipped with ATI Radeon HD 2600 PRO GPUs, while the cheapest 20-inch model has the ATI Radeon HD 2400 XT.
