Canon last week unveiled a networked digital multifunction device that does more than just print, scan and copy.

The Color ImageRunner C3220 includes Canons Java-based MEAP (Multifunctional Embedded Application Platform), which allows users to install and run up to 18 applications on the device. For example, software could be installed to imprint corporate logos on all documents or automatically reroute scanned documents into the companys database, said Canon officials.

The C3220 prints and copies at 32 pages per minute in color and monochrome, and it scans at 36 ppm in monochrome and 23 ppm in color. The C3220, available now, costs $11,940.

Also this week, Canon and its partner eCopy announced a software add-on for Canons ImageWare document management system. The new software, called eCopy Connector, allows users to send scanned documents from the scanner to the appropriate file within Canons document management system. eCopy Connector costs $1,495.
