Compaq: Alpha to Intel
In an effort to reduce its reliance on hardware revenue, Compaq Computer last week said it would phase out its Alpha 64-bit server processor division. Compaq will transfer resources from the Alpha group to Intel, which plans to fold the technology into its Itanium chip family. The companies did not disclose financial terms of the multiyear deal. Compaq says that by 2004, all its 64-bit servers will use Intels Itanium chips.
AOL Tops 30M
First, it conquered America — now the world? America Online last week said it has signed up more than 30 million subscribers world-wide, including 6 million users in 16 countries outside the U.S. The AOL Time Warner division said its overall subscription base has doubled during the past two and a half years.
Free-Lancers Win Case
The U.S. Supreme Court ruled last week that free-lance writers have the right to control whether their work appears in electronic formats, including on the Net. The courts 7-2 decision said The New York Times and other publishers had infringed on copyrights owned by free-lancers who had not agreed to have their articles reproduced electronically.
