Orion Multisystems last week began shipping a 96-processor clustered workstation aimed at users who want to run complex tasks on their desktops.

The DS-96 is Orions second product, following the launch last fall of the 12-node desktop DT-12 workstation. The clustered workstations link processors in a single box so that complex workloads can be broken down, with the pieces running simultaneously.

The workstations support standard technology, such as Transmetas x86-based, low-power Efficeon processors; Ethernet connectivity; and MPI (Message Passing Interface).

Officials said Orion is moving in several directions for its future systems, including more processors and nodes in the same power envelope, lower latency between chips, and 64-bit computing.

The company is also looking at processors from other manufacturers.
