IBM today introduced the T30, a new ThinkPad computer that features the TCPA-compliant Embedded Security Subsystem and a programmable touchpad.

This is the first laptop to feature ESS, a standardized combination of hardware and software that includes user-selectable automatic file, folder and e-mail encryption and decryption.

The T30 also is the first computer to feature IBMs UltraNav system, which is basically a high-tech laptop mouse that combines a trackpoint and a programmable touchpad. Users can program the four corners of the touchpad as “hot buttons” that launch up to four applications or Web sites, said officials at IBM in Research Triangle Park, N.C.

The T30 includes a shock absorber that protects data with a cushion of air in case a customer moves the notebook from hard surface to hard surface when the notebook is running.

Through a partnership with Cisco Systems Inc., IBM has included built-in support for the 802.11b (“Wi-Fi”) standard as well as support for the IEEE 802.1x Extensible Authentication Protocol standard.

Certain models include support for the Bluetooth local wireless connection protocol as well.

The T30 has a 14.1-inch TFT display and battery life of up to 3 hours. Pricing ranges from $2,499 to $3,499, depending on the processor, memory and other options. The T30 will be available May 8.
