Descriptions and discussions about the Semantic Web can quickly get very esoteric, leaving even the Web technology savvy often feeling lost and confused. And that’s before the many tongue-twisting acronyms and words like ontology start to get thrown around.
That’s why when it comes to the Semantic Web nothing is better than actual examples of real implementations. I know I didn’t really start to understand the Semantic Web until I saw some early demonstrations using DAML (DARPA Markup Language) showing how it helped them find all data on equipment that had multiple names and descriptions.
So to help here is a visual list of some good examples of public technology deployments that use Semantic Web technology. In the first few slides I do a head-to-head comparison of a search using traditional Web search technology and a query using Semantic Web technology.
