Roger Dingledine created The Free Haven Project, a free software for anonymous and censorship-resistant Internet use.

EWEEK’S GOOGLE WATCH Has the news that search engines turned over millions of search queries to the feds done you guys any good? It must have people running scared!

“We’re up to something like 200,000 active users at this point. and 250,000 hits per day for the past week. We don’t track downloads in particular, just number of web hits per day, because we don’t want our web logs to be interesting targets for anybody.”

“But the Google issue is only a piece of that. I think the main reason is that a lot of stories have been hitting critical mass together; anonymous blogging, wiretap worries, and people are starting to pick up on the fact that there are so many opportunities to collect personal information about them and their activities.”

EWEEK’S GOOGLE WATCH Any luck finding white knight funding?

“One of the big questions from the Tor project’s perspective now is where we should go next — we need to find some new sponsors to fund further scalability and usability work, since we have more users than we can handle right now.”
