Google Android chief Andy Rubin graced the stage at Dive: Dive into Mobile Dec. 6, talking all things mobile with Walt Mossberg and Kara Swisher.

Rubin, whose team launched the Samsung Nexus S earlier in the day, said 172 phones are now running Android, an amazing number of gadgets for a platform less than 3 years old.

He complimented Apple for making good consumer products, something that’s no doubt easier to do with Android gaining on Apple in market share, according to the latest comScore numbers.

Rubin’s real treat was a demonstration of a Motorola tablet prototype running a super early version of the Honeycomb version of Android, version 3.0.

The device has video chat, an Nvidia processor, a “dual core 3D processor,” and a cool-looking new Google Maps for Android version, which should launch for smartphones this week. This version leverages the 3D processor on the tablet.

Talking about it anymore would be wasteful, especially because I’m going to drill down further into the device on eWEEK later today.

Check out the demo yourself here and below:

Wow. Gorgeous device.
