Google plans to describe a new Google service for the open-source community at the Open Source Convention on Thursday.
Greg Stein, an engineering manager who manages some open-source projects at Google, wrote that the company is “putting the final touches on it as I wrote this blog post.”
Stein’s involvement in several open-source projects outside of Google, including the Subversion version control system, leads some to speculate that Google may be planning some kind of competitor to code repository SourceForge or, at least, an open-source code vertical search engine.
Google launched a Linux version of its photo-sharing app, Picasa, in May. The company also announced a beta Linux version of Google Earth 4 in June.
Open-source rumors have surrounded Google before. In February Google was rumored to be developing a Linux-based operating system for the desktop. That rumor was denied by Ubuntu founder (and first space tourist!) Mark Shuttleworth.
