Earlier this week I wrote pieces previewing the Droid X launch, which came to pass June 23, and the Droid 2, which did not.

Nothing, not a word was breathed about the Droid 2. No one even asked! I’m ashamed of myself and the other reporters, bloggers and analysts in the room at the Mandarin Oriental in New York City.

We had Verizon Wireless EVP and CMO John Stratton, Motorola Co-CEO Sanjay Jha, and Android creator Andy Rubin on stage and couldn’t find out about the Droid 2.

So here’s my guess: The Droid 2 will come in November or maybe December, one year after the original Droid, which sold millions of copies.

Why do I think this? Well, Verizon is offering an almost unthinkable deal: Buy one Motorola Droid and get one free. Check out the top right hand corner of the Droid page:

The finer print says buy a Droid for $149.99 and get one free. That’s $75 per phone! Users must obviously get the two-year contract with $29.99 per month data plan for this offer.

Seriously. I’ve seen the commercials for this for weeks, but it never dawned on me why this was significant because I’ve been thinking about the Droid X and Droid 2 so much of late.

Clearly, Verizon is trying to shed its Droid inventory to make room for the Droid 2, which has been tested in the wild by Android and Me and Gizmodo.

The Motorola Droid 1, as some call it, had a nice run and really rocket launched Android into the smartphone space.

Now it’s time to be put out to pasture, or at least given away to make room for the newborn Droid 2, which is a lot like the Droid X inside.

Make sense?
