The recent outbreak of viruses targeting Windows systems has caused more headaches for beleaguered corporate IT staffs. For Windows users, the virus onslaught drives home the point that installing a desktop firewall such as BlackIce to protect against hackers and worms isnt a frivolous pursuit; its a necessity.

Internet Security Systems recently released an update for both the BlackIce PC and Server Protection firewall applications. ISS BlackIce Version 3.6 includes new detection and blocking capabilities for Windows DCOM intrusions and RPC buffer overflows, which can help hold the W32.Blaster worm at bay.

ISS has also refined BlackIces detection of DoS attacks on the Cisco IOS operating system and enhanced its NT VDM detection.

BlackIce for PC 3.6 is priced starting at $40; the server edition costs $300.
