Several U.S. government and industry bodies are behind an effort to stop a proposed Chinese proprietary wireless encryption standard. The scheme is incompatible with the Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP) or Advanced Encryption Scheme (AES) schemes currently used by the IEEE in its 802.11x standards. Frank Vargo, vice president of international affairs at the National Association of Manufacturers, said Chinas move just tramples over one of the most basic provisions of the World Trade Organization.
