WASHINGTON, D.C. –The FBI is warning network providers to expect a wave of denial-of-service attacks in the wake of last weeks terrorist strikes.
In a new advisory, the National Infrastructure Protection Center (NIPC) warned of “vigilante hacking activity against organizations associated with the perceived perpetrators of the September 11, 2001 terror attacks.”
The NIPC said that on Sept. 12 a group of hackers called the Dispatchers claimed they had already started moving against communications and finance infrastructures of organizations they perceive as supporting the terrorists and would ramp up by today.
“There is the opportunity for significant collateral damage to any computer network and telecommunications infrastructure that does not have current countermeasures in place,” said the advisory. “The Dispatchers claim to have over 1,000 machines under their control for the attacks. It is likely that the attackers will mask their operations by using the IP addresses and pirated systems of uninvolved third parties.”
