Today’s topics include a report finding that prioritizing vulnerabilities is key to patching success, and Extreme Networks unveiling new 802.11ax WiFi 6 access points.

According to a report released by Kenna Security and the Cyentia Institute on Jan. 22, titled “Prioritization to Prediction: Getting Real About Remediation,” there is no shortage of software vulnerabilities, but not all flaws have equal severity and only a subset of the riskiest vulnerabilities must be patched immediately.

The report analyzed 3 billion vulnerabilities managed across more than 500 organizations—of those, approximately 544 million vulnerabilities were rated as high risk. While organizations have patched 70 percent of the critical vulnerabilities, that still left 163 million vulnerabilities open.

“Enterprises would ideally patch every vulnerability within their infrastructure, but we know the reality is that they don’t have the time or resources to do so,” Ed Bellis, CTO at Kenna Security, told eWEEK. “Due to that reality, security and IT teams need to prioritize their remediation efforts to target the riskiest vulnerabilities for remediation first, then move down the line as time and resources permit.”

Extreme Networks is unveiling new 802.11ax WiFi access points in its objective to deliver WiFi 6 capabilities to enterprises to bolster their wireless capabilities at the network edge.

The six new access points, which are powerful enough to be deployed in sports stadiums but also are aimed at indoor and outdoor environments, make up the company’s ExtremeMobility 500 series and are part of Extreme’s Smart OmniEdge solution for the network edge.

In conjunction with the new access points, Extreme officials also are introducing a new family of ExtremeSwitching network switches aimed at edge devices.
