NEC Computers Inc. later today will introduce a handheld computer based on Microsoft Corp.s Pocket PC operating system.

The NEC MobilePro P300 Pocket PC includes both a CompactFlash Type II and a Secure Digital expansion slot, meaning customers can use add-on memory and add-on accessories such as modems or wireless LAN cards at the same time.

The device, which weighs less than seven ounces, runs on a 206MHz Intel StrongARM 32-bit RISC processor. It comes with 32MB of RAM as well as a 32MB secure digital memory add-on card.

The screen, a 3.8-inch reflective front-lit display, supports more than 65,000 colors.

Besides the OS, the MobilePro P300 comes installed with synchronization software and a Java plug-in that enables secure downloads of e-commerce applications.

Largely because of its $599 price tag, the device is aimed at the corporate market. To that end, NEC offers a one-year service along with the warranty. This includes a rapid exchange service that offers customers a replacement system the next business day, as well as a 24-hour hotline.

The device will be available in December through select resellers, officials said. Customers can also contact the company directly.
