Open-source software provider SuSE Linux AG Thursday announced an agreement with SAP AG to provide Linux support to corporate customers.

Under the terms of the agreement, SuSE will work with SAP, of Waldorf, Germany, on support for those customers running SAP applications on the United Linux Enterprise Server.

By joining the two companies support and development teams, SuSE can solve problems down to the level of the Linux source code, officials said.

This isnt the first time the two companies have worked together.

In the spring of 2001, the Linux Enterprise Server was certified for SAP software on the x86 architecture.

Since May the following year, users have been able to utilize SAP software on the latest generation of IBM mainframes—with the Linux Server for IBM zSeries the only Linux system released for the mainframe version of mySAP Business Suite, officials said.

Whats different about the SuSE operating system is that it does not confine SAP users to a single hardware architecture. Rather, its available for Intel processors and IBN zSeries 64-bit mainframes.

The SuSE Linux Enterprise Server 8, released in November of 2002, is available for deployment of the mySAP Business Suite.
