The newest version of Xandros Desktop, the Linux desktop that focuses heavily on ease of use and deployment and provides a Windows-like interface, is hardly even an upgrade, with one new feature and mainly bug fixes that make it more like a patch than an upgrade.

However, for some business users, that one new feature—an upgrade to CodeWeavers CrossOver Office 3.01—makes Xandros Desktop Business Edition 2.5 worth a look. This version of CrossOver Office is a major improvement for business users who want to run a Linux desktop but need to use Windows applications.

With the inclusion of CrossOver Office 3.01, Xandros Desktop users can run many more Windows applications on the Linux desktop, including Microsofts Outlook XP and Project and IBMs Lotus Notes 6.5.1. I also liked that, with this version, I could load Windows-only plug-ins for my Linux-based Mozilla browser.

Xandros made it simple to upgrade my Xandros Desktop 2.0 to the new version, and if one doesnt need the $39.95 CrossOver Office 3.01 upgrade, moving to Xandros Desktop 2.5 is free.

Xandros Desktop Business Edition 2.5, released last month, starts at $129. For more information, go to www.xandros.com.
