Last month saw the release of XFree86 4.1.0, the open-source X Window System that drives the GUIs for operating systems such as Linux and the various versions of Unix.

This latest release includes improved support for many graphics cards, including ATI Technologies Radeon and NVidias GeForce 3, as well as improvements to the X Server itself.

I installed XFree86 4.1.0 on a machine running Red Hat 7.1 with the KDE 2.1.1 desktop environment. KDE 2.1.1 includes support for anti-aliased fonts, and I was impressed with its font-rendering performance improvements when teamed with XFree86 4.1.0 rather than 4.0.3.
