Secure file-sync-and-sharing solutions provider WatchDox introduced LockDox, a free service that lets individuals send confidential files with enterprise-grade security.
The platform allows users to stay in control of files even after they are shared and lets individuals and small businesses share confidential information, such as medical records, media files, legal documents, financial data or other creative intellectual property online, without the fear of private information being compromised.
“We’ve seen that individuals and small business have just as much need to secure information as large Fortune 500 firms,” Dan Barahona, senior vice president strategy and business development at WatchDox, said in a statement. “We created LockDox so that anyone can quickly and easily share sensitive documents with the security, tracking and control offered by WatchDox.”
The platform lets users upload a file, apply security settings, share the file with designated recipients and track all activity. For an added layer of security, users can even revoke access after the fact.
Traditional file-sharing services offer no control over a file once it is accessed, which means a recipient can do anything with the data, including printing, forwarding and downloading it.
To eliminate this concern, LockDox gives users more complete control over the lifecycle of a file by applying the same WatchDox security settings used by the company’s larger clients, including financial institutions, manufacturers, movie studios and government agencies.

LockDox users can apply file settings including set as view only, disable downloading, add a dynamic, viewer-centric watermark or set an expiration date.
In March the company was awarded the Skyhigh CloudTrust rating of enterprise-ready for the cloud-focused enterprise market. Additionally, WatchDox achieved the Federal Information Processing Standards (FIPS) 140-2 Level 1 certification from the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), which allows federal, state and local agencies to implement certified document security services.
The FIPS 140-2 accreditation, a standard set by the U.S. government regarding the cryptology of information across technology platforms, determines which solutions are certified for use by government and regulated industries that need to disseminate sensitive information.
The WatchDox enterprise file-sync-and-share (EFSS) solution keeps files protected with FIPS-certified encryption the entire time, whether the files are in transit, in use or stored at rest, even when the files are shared with an external party or accessed from an unmanaged device.
