Network backup solutions specialist Arkeia Software announced a firmware update that allows the storage capacity on its R320 and R620 disk-based backup appliances to double. The appliances, 2U in height, will now support up to 48 terabytes maximum raw capacity, and capacity beyond the internal limit of 24TB is provided by Fibre Channel-connected, third-party disk arrays. The appliances, currently available, bundle Arkeia Network Backup and agent software for up to 60 client machines. Pricing for appliances with Fibre Channel connectivity begins at $27,400.

The company€™s Progressive Deduplication technology is designed to reduce the size of backup by a ratio of 5-to-1 in typical backup sets, allowing users to effectively manage 240TB of non-deduped data. Arkeia€™s backup software protects virtual environments in more than 200 physical platforms, including Linux, Windows, AIX, BSD, HP-UX, Mac OS, Netware and Solaris computers. Arkeia acquired its progressive deduplication technology when the company purchased Kadena Systems in November 2009.

“Complexity, cost of management, and total cost of ownership of backup and recovery solutions need not be high in order to achieve high capacities, particularly when deduplication is used to conserve storage resources,” Bill Evans, Arkeia€™s CEO, said in a press statement. “Doubling the maximum disk capacity of Arkeia’s popular backup appliances means they will appeal to even more midmarket organizations, as well as better accommodate the growing needs of current Arkeia customers. Arkeia channel partners can leverage established storage hardware relationships to quickly deploy third-party storage disk arrays and expand Arkeia appliance capacity.”

The company offers six models of the backup appliance with usable disk backup capacities (after RAID), ranging from 1TB to 20TB. Four offer field-upgradeable disk capacities and two include internal LTO-4 (fourth-generation linear tape-open) tape drives. A solid-state drive (SSD) is included on the R620 series, and all models feature a one-year hardware warranty.

“Arkeia’s award-winning appliances are a great solution for our customers of any size,” Ron Griffin, director of business development at Padova Technologies said in a prepared statement. “The data needs of small to medium companies continue to increase, and data protection appliances that can grow with customers’ needs over time are invaluable. None of our customers wants to provision up-front the full capacity that they’ll need in two or three years. With Arkeia’s field-upgradeable appliances, our customers enjoy a scalable data protection solution that respects cap-ex planning constraints.”
