From managing storage to instrumenting and securing the networks and applications that use it, Computer Associates International Inc. is planning an aggressive three quarters of software launches, culminating at the CA-World show in May.
The plans involve new and old technologies and indicate that the Islandia, N.Y., developer is shifting from its acquisitive tendencies and entering an extended period of productization, said Mark Barrenechea, senior vice president of product development.
Across the companys six product areas—Advantage Database Management and Application Development, AllFusion Application Life Cycle Management, BrightStor Storage, CleverPath Portal and Business Intelligence, eTrust Security, and Unicenter Enterprise Management—CA early next year will begin merging redundant software agents, Barrenechea said.
As a result, users will get one agent per function, which shares data among CA applications, instead of having to buy and administer overlapping agents for each application, he said. BrightStor will be one of the first attempts at that, early next year, CA storage officials said.
Regarding both the agent-merging and reversioning plans, “It is certainly not in our plans to remove the ability for the customer to buy by component,” Barrenechea said.
In the first half of next year, CA will add extensions to its BrightStor series to perform disk-based backup and recovery. Later next year, CA plans to release storage virtualization software that will allow users and applications to administer and access disparate storage systems as one unified pool.
