CommVault, Informatica Combine for New Data Archive

Automated storage provider CommVault on Dec. 14 entered into a partnership with database integration specialist Informatica to produce a new archiving package for large data sets that enables support for a number of top-tier enterprise databases and CRM or ERP applications.
Those database and enterprise applications include Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle, DB2, SAP, PeopleSoft, Siebel and other custom or legacy applications, CommVault said.
CommVault has built its reputation on handling unstructured data. Informatica is well known for handling structured data with scalable enterprise control for archiving unconnected business applications.
The new partnership will enable CommVault’s Simpana software to archive large databases from mission-critical business applications using Informatica’s data integration software. The idea is to better streamline e-discovery tasks and improve database space management, CommVault said.
The Simpana software — which won an eWEEK Software Excellence award in 2008 — helps reduce the size of large databases by weeding out unnecessary or repetitive data blocks, which nearly always results in improved application performance.
Smaller, more efficient data stores also minimize the time and costs in performing daily or weekly backup, e-discovery, and replication duties as well as routine application upgrades.
According to a recent study published by Enterprise Strategy Group, nearly half of IT managers surveyed said they have been asked to produce information that resides in databases as part of a legal or regulatory e-discovery inquiry.
