Light and fast NEC Computers Inc., of Sacramento, Calif., has introduced a lightweight, silver-magnesium-encased notebook, the Versa TXi, that company officials said offers dual-spindle capabilities and a modular-bay design normally found only in heftier laptops.

Multifaceted Weighing less than 4 pounds, the notebook uses a 12.1-inch thin-film transistor XGA display and ships with a 20GB hard drive, 128MB of memory, an integrated 10/100 Ethernet and V.90 modem combo card, and a choice of Microsoft Windows 98 SE or Windows 2000.

Pricing The notebook is available now. A sample base configuration, including a 750MHz Pentium III processor and a DVD-ROM/CD-RW combo drive, sells for $3,399.
