SAN file services vendor OnStor Inc. Tuesday rolled out its newest SAN filer for enterprises seeking the file-based simplicity of network-attached storage with the scalability and power of a storage area network.

OnStors SF4400 series SAN filer is a hardware/software combo capable of managing an enterprises file services on a SAN. With more and more file-based enterprise data, users are looking for file storage options that are more scalable and manageable than current NAS offerings, according to Bob Miller, president and CEO of OnStor.

OnStors SF4400 series fills the bill by allowing the consolidation of NAS storage islands into one SAN with a common management interface, he added. The platform scales to 40 petabytes and is capable of up to 140,000 IOPS, officials said.

OnStor officials in Los Gatos, Calif., said the platform includes multiple levels of redundancy and data protection features such as SAN-based disk-to-disk data replication.

The SF4400 series is made up of the SAN filer hardware and the OnStor application software suite, which includes native CIFS and NFS protocols, data snapshot capability, and automated volume management. It also incorporates OnStors STOR-FS file system, which maintains data and device state information allowing uninterrupted load balancing, failover and system maintenance.

The hardware portion uses a 64-bit architecture with dedicated processors to perform continuous disk-to-disk replication and disk-to-tape backup without interrupting current file transactions.

The OnStor SF4400 SAN filer system is available now. Pricing starts at $85,000.
