Little-known OwnBackup claimed a notation in data storage history Aug. 9 when it launched what it called the first backup solution for Salesforce’s cloud on the Microsoft Azure cloud.
The 5-year-old New Jersey-based startup said its cloud-to-cloud backup and recovery platform had been re-engineered specifically for Salesforce and other enterprise applications built on the Force.com platform.
As a result, Salesforce customers using OwnBackup now have the choice of where to put their business-critical data—in Amazon Web Services or in the Azure cloud—from these applications and can protect that data via enterprise-grade backup tools. Previously, OwnBackup for Salesforce was available only for AWS.
OwnBackup claims to provide secure, automated, daily backups of software-as-a-service (SaaS) and platform-as-a-service (PaaS) data, as well as sophisticated data compare-and-restore tools for disaster recovery.
OwnBackup’s solution complements a SaaS vendor’s built-in data protection mechanisms by covering data loss and corruption caused by human errors, malicious intent, integration errors and rogue applications. The package also provides enterprises with the performance and reporting required to meet compliance regulations in a number of industries.

OwnBackup was co-founded by data recovery, data protection and information security experts, each with more than 15 years’ experience in their respective fields. OwnBackup was the top-ranked backup and restore independent software vendor on the Salesforce.com AppExchange in 2015.

The company’s goal is to provide a single pane of glass for data protection and management for all the enterprises’ SaaS and PaaS data stored in the cloud, starting with Salesforce and the Force.com platform.

“Enterprises are still unknowingly putting business-critical information at tremendous risk by failing to backup cloud data,” OwnBackup CEO Sam Gutmann said. “Most enterprises still do not realize that cloud data should be protected by an enterprise backup and recovery solution.”

On AWS, OwnBackup currently protects billions of Salesforce records, prevents data corruption, meets compliance mandates and restores cloud data in the event of a data loss, according to the company.
