Data storage and security provider Symantec Dec. 3 completed its acquisition of Vontu, a San Francisco-based maker of data loss prevention software. The purchase price was $350 million in cash and assumed options.

Symantec’s deal to buy Vontu, announced Nov. 5, comes after a busy few months in the DLP sector. Security rivals McAfee and Trend Micro both made moves of their own, with McAfee announcing plans to buy data encryption provider SafeBoot and Trend Micro declaring its intent to acquire Provilla.

Earlier this year, Websense, of San Diego, bought Port Authority for $90 million, and Cisco Systems jumped into the space when it acquired e-mail filter and anti-spam provider IronPort.

Vontu’s specialty is combining endpoint and network-based technology to accurately detect and automatically protect confidential data wherever it is stored or used.

Symantec officials said the acquisition builds on Symantec’s longtime OEM partnership with Vontu and will provide a new component of Symantec’s Security 2.0 vision, which shifts the focus of security from simply securing systems and devices to also protecting the information itself.

Symantec has included Vontu software in its Symantec Mail Security 8300 appliance for several years.
