Toshiba caught up with data storage competitors Western Digital and Iomega on March 29 when it introduced a new line of pocket-size storage devices ranging in capacity from 500GB to 1TB.
The company’s new Windows 7-based Canvio portable hard drives are aimed primarily at consumers but could also be something SMBs and midrange businesses might find useful, since they are inexpensive, easily transportable and capacious.
The Canvios weigh only about 6 ounces, are a bit smaller in width and length than a 4-by-6 postcard, and come in five colors and four storage capacities.
Pricing also is a noteworthy attribute. Toshiba is marketing them at $120 for the 500GB version, $140 for 640GB, $160 for 750GB and $200 for the 1TB Canvio Plus.
The Canvio comes bundled with NTI BackupNow EZ for Windows 7, which has been upgraded with better search capabilities and simpler step-by-step restore functionality to retrieve lost files, Toshiba said.
The drive has a “set-it-and-forget-it” operation, Toshiba said, which can automatically back up a computer while in use.
The Canvio also provides an option for complete system backup, enabling users to restore select files or the entire computer, even if Windows is unable to start, Toshiba said.
The new drives are available now. For more information, go here.
