Xiotech on April 13 unveiled a network-attached storage package that combines its own “intelligent” arrays with Symantec’s FileStore server to provide a new NAS-type system powerful and capacious enough to handle cloud computing workloads.
The company made the announcement at the Symantec Vision 2010 conference in Las Vegas, which continues through April 15.
Xiotech’s Intelligent Storage Element (ISE) arrays are new-generation machines that can handle quickly changing application demands, Xiotech marketing exec Brian Reagan told eWEEK.
FileStore is Symantec’s high-end industrial-strength server that provides high performance and scalability for large enterprise storage environments.
Acronymically called ISE NAS, the combined system features rapid deployment and automated provisioning of file storage and clustered file systems. It can scale up to 16 asymmetric or symmetric nodes, Reagan said.
Storage capacity can scale out independently up to 2PB behind a single cluster, he said.
The new system becomes available through Xiotech channel partners in June.
New API Also Released
In a separate announcement at Storage Networking World in Orlando, Fla., Eden Prairie, Minn.-based Xiotech introduced CorteX, a new storage API based on a RESTful API that provides an interface for applications to communicate with Xiotech’s ISE.
CorteX enables a storage admin control of information from an individual ISE, including volume management, physical configuration, physical status and physical performance, Reagan said.
CorteX, a proprietary tool available only to customers, enables an ISE to meet most requirements for intelligent application storage, such as understanding the storage resources available, their current state and automated control of the allocation of storage resources, Reagan said.
“This means that storage hardware can be treated as a software component in the same way as other components in a virtualized infrastructure,” Reagan said.

Xiotech also has launched a CorteX Developer Community.
