We read frequently about “things” as a service: software, storage, networking, security, rides, hotels and others. Just about everything in the world is, or is potentially subject to, becoming a subscription service. Just ask Zuora, which has dubbed the future as being dominated by the “subscription economy.”
So here’s a new one about which we may be hearing more in the future: Workspace-as-a-service.
IGEL, which built its early reputation in enterprise virtual desktop installations and now has evolved into an international provider in endpoint management software, will announce May 24 that it is collaborating with device management software provider MTM Technologies, Inc. for the delivery of the new AnywhereApp customizable cloud-based workspace solution.
A virtualized workspace is similar to a virtual desktop implementation except that the central processing is done in the cloud rather than in a data center or in some other onsite system location. Another major difference is that the workspace also can be used on tablets and smartphones, whereas VDI is generally limited to thin clients and desktop or laptop PCs.
IGEL claims that this is the only fully-supported workspace-as-a-service infrastructure designed specifically for a mobile workforce. AnywhereApp is powered by IGEL’s software and uses the company’s Universal Management Suite (UMS) for the management of any remote device.
AnywhereApp provides mid-market and enterprise users with a customizable architecture and end-to-end management, offering secure access to desktops, applications and data from any device and on any infrastructure (on-premises, public, private, or hybrid cloud).
“The new digital workforce demands mobility with users expecting their endpoints and devices to deliver robust performance and data access, no matter where they are working,” IGEL President and CEO Jed Ayres said. “To meet this need, IT must balance top priorities, including security and efficiency, while enhancing user experience and productivity.”
