Data warehousing vendor Netezza announced Feb. 24 it has acquired data auditing and protection vendor Tizor Systems for an undisclosed sum.

According to officials at Netezza, the acquisition will help “enterprise customers to track, store and perform forensic analysis against years of data access history and more easily meet regulatory compliance requirements.”

“As regulatory compliance and information governance rules get even stricter, it’s vital that companies know who is accessing information and how,” Jim Baum, president and CEO of Netezza, said in a statement. “The enterprise data auditing and protection market is expected to grow significantly in the next couple of years. By acquiring Tizor, we will be able to offer our customers best-in-class data auditing products that align very well with our enterprise offering.”

The move is an interesting one for Netezza, which in 2008 made two acquisitions centered on deepening analytics in the data warehouse. The company acquired NuTech Solutions in May 2008, and purchased Intelligent Integration Systems later on in the year.

However, Netezza may be looking to capitalize on the growth of the data auditing market. Forrester Research predicted in a report in 2007 that the value of the database auditing and real-time protection market-including new licenses, support and services-would double by 2010.

“Enterprises rely on Tizor to deliver the best data auditing results, in the shortest time, using the fewest resources,” Prat Moghe, founder and CEO of Tizor, said in a statement. “Netezza’s acquisition of our company joins the forces of two companies that deliver innovative appliance-oriented analytics solutions for business intelligence and data compliance.”

Netezza said in its statement that Tizor Systems will operate as a subsidiary.
