LAS VEGAS—The Apache Software Foundation released the 1.0 version of its open-source Geronimo Java application server in January, but sources said it is readying a subsequent release for the JavaOne conference in May.

Matt Filios, founder and general manager of Virtuas Solutions LLC, of Denver, said Geronimo should reach Version 1.1 in time for JavaOne, which begins May 16.

Meanwhile, in a session at TheServerSide Java Symposium here, Jeff Genender, practice leader for Virtuas Solutions, an open-source professional services organization that focuses on Geronimo as one of its core technologies, said upcoming features in subsequent versions will include “robust clustering, even more friendly configuration and application management, more assemblies, and the ability to run with Java 5 (Java Standard Edition 5.0). Genender said specifications to support Java Enterprise Edition 5 and for Geronimo 2.0 are under way.

Geronimo is “ready for prime time,” Genender said, as evidenced by IBM basing its IBM WebSphere Application Server Community Edition on the Geronimo platform.

Moreover, Filios said Virtuas is preparing an analysis document comparing Geronimo with the leading Java application servers, including JBoss, JOnAS, IBM WebSphere and BEA WebLogic.

The analysis will compare the architecture, interoperability, performance and scalability, Filios said. And to introduce the study, Virtuas plans to hold an event called Geronimo Live during the week of JavaOne, he said.

“Well be hosting this with a number of Geronimo partners,” Filios said.

Filios would not give any indication of how the comparison is looking. “We do JBoss support, we do Geronimo support, and therell be some holes in what Geronimo can offer. Well be at [Version] 1.1,” he said. “Were a big JOnAS supporter, too,” he added.
