Laplink Software on Oct. 31 introduced PCmover, a computer software product that will be able to transfer programs and applications from one machine running Windows 95, 98, Me, 2000, or XP to another computer running Windows XP, including Macs with Parallels or Boot Camp.

Bellevue, Wash.-based Laplink boasts that PCmover gives users the ability to transfer software programs, including all of their files and settings, to another computer, by installing PCmover on both machines and making sure that they are connected through a LAN or a Laplink USB cable.

Laplink will also have a Vista-certified version ready in time for the operating systems January 2007 launch.

“Many software companies imply that their products are total migration solutions, when in reality they only move files and settings, leaving users to waste time hunting for old software CDs and serial numbers to manually reinstall their programs,” said Thomas Koll, CEO and chairman of Laplink Software, in a company statement.

Koll said he hopes that PCmover will get the consumers attention and that as a result, it will be known that there is actually a software out there that can transfer programs without having to uninstall and reinstall the software onto a new machine.

“Until they hear about PCmover, most consumers just figure this partial solution is the best they can hope for,” Koll said in the same statement. “Its our job to inform people that a total migration product actually exists.”

One customer revels in the fact that PCmover makes the transfer of programs from one PC to another possible.

“I purchased a new computer and dreaded building all the applications, including some very special ones with add-in and multiple upgrades,” said Mark Huston, an IT project Manager with IT/IS Software Development, in a company statement.

“PCmover was outstanding: It moved every application over with no problems, making a very difficult job transparently easy.”

This software is slated to be available in January 2007 for $49.95 in all major electronic retail stores and online at Laplinks Web site.
