IBM Global Services chief John R. Joyce, on the heels of upbeat earnings news for the services behemoth, left IBM today for a new career at venture capital firm Silver Lake Partners.

With his “retirement” effective immediately, IBM made three executive appointments to lead the $46.5 billion services organization.

IBM promoted Mike Daniels to senior vice president of information technology services for IGS while naming Ginni Rometty named senior vice president of enterprise business services for IGS.

At the same time, IBM named Bob Moffat as senior vice president of integrated operations. Moffat, as head of IBMs supply chain operations, saved Big Blue billions of dollars by increasing efficiencies. Under his direction, IGS created a pilot program for a supply chain practice.

Moffat will take over service delivery “and well apply those advantages to services for on demand and global integration of operations,” said Edward Barbini, IBM spokesman, in Armonk, N.Y.

“The delivery side of IBM services is a big undertaking. This will allow IBM to leverage its global scale to take advantage of worldwide skills,” he added.

All three executives will report to CEO Sam Palmisano.

Barbini said the reorganization of IGS reflects a shift in the way that clients buy services. “This reorganization reflects how customers choose to buy services, and IBM is looking to better take advantage of the growth opportunities in the services market.

“We see a bifurcation in the services market just like in the IT hardware market,” Barbini added. “IBM is investing in the high-value skills our clients are asking for,” he said.

Joyce chose to make his move following the posting of positive growth for the second quarter for IGS, after a disappointing first quarter. The units Business Consulting Services arm, which includes the PriceWaterhouse Coopers consulting business, “just posted its best quarter since the acquisition of PwC,” Barbini said.

“It grew 9 percent year over year. We had three business transformation deals worth over $100 million signed in the quarter,” he said. Business performance transformation services grew 25 percent over the first quarter and were up 30 percent year over year, he added.

In other executive moves, IBM promoted Nicholas Donofrio to executive vice president for technology and innovation and named Marc Lautenbach general manager of IBM Americas.

Janet Perna also retired from her post as general manager for information management software, which includes DB2.
