CHICAGO—Research In Motion (RIM) announced BlackBerry Enterprise Server Version 4.0, featuring enhanced security and over-the-air provisioning, today at the companys third annual Wireless Enterprise Symposium here.

The new version, which the company demonstrated at the symposium but will not ship until later this year, simplifies deployment and application development for mobile devices in the enterprise and further secures the data being transmitted.

Support for the AES (Advanced Encryption Standard) will be added in Version 4.0. Enterprise Server already includes support for Triple DES (Data Encryption Standard), S/MIME (Secure Multipurpose Internet Mail Extension) and FIPS (Federal Information Processing Standard) government certification.

“Security, reliability, manageability and scalability remained high priorities for this new release, along with many new functional enhancements, including wireless PIM synchronization, improved attachment viewing and enriched browsing,” said Mike Lazaridis, president and co-CEO of RIM.

Version 4.0 allows users to wirelessly exchange data with the BlackBerry Enterprise Server, eliminating the need for a cradle to provision the devices and to synchronize user data between the server and the handheld. It also includes an asset-tracking mechanism that allows IT departments to identify the handheld devices being deployed and to remotely control the applications that are installed on them.

The new version also features improvements in the handling of attachments. It includes an enriched browser and new Java development tools, as well as telephone enhancements such as speed dial.
