Advanced Micro Devices is offering a new certification for its server platform that will support Novells SUSE Linux Enterprise Server, the chip maker announced Aug. 8 at the LinuxWorld conference in San Francisco.

The agreement will allow the Sunnyvale, Calif., chip makers system builders and other channel partners to carry Novells “YES Certified” label, which certifies that it is compatible with the SUSE Linux Enterprise Server. AMD is offering the certification through its Validated Server program.

In addition to announcing the Novell certification, three small vendors—Supermicro Computer, Tyan Computer and Uniwide Technologies—will be the first system builders to offer these AMD platforms.

The three vendors were also among the first companies that said they will build platforms based on AMDs soon-to-be-released quad-core Opteron processor, called “Barcelona.”

AMD is expected to release its quad-core processors later this month. In addition to these vendors, Sun Microsystems and Hewlett-Packard will support the new processors, although the two companies have not announced specific systems for Barcelona yet.

In June, Novell, of Waltham, Mass., released its first service pack for SUSE Linux Enterprise Server, which included additional support for high-availability storage infrastructures and support for new processor technologies, including the quad-core Barcelona chips and Intels quad-core Xeon processors.
