For enterprises with multiple locations that require very high-capacity connections, such as hospitals and colleges, TelCove Inc. this week will ramp up its metropolitan Ethernet services to a capacity of 10G bps, 10 times faster than its current offering.

Until now, TelCoves metro and intercity fiber-optic network offered Ethernet service connections ranging from 10M bps to 1G bps. The Canonsburg, Pa., company provides voice, data and Internet connectivity in 70 markets in the eastern United States.

“We think the industries that are really going to jump on this are the disaster recovery services, state and local government, education groups that support multimedia, and health care,” said Bob Crossland, senior product manager for Ethernet services at TelCove.

Perdue Office Interiors Inc., an office furniture retailer and a TelCove customer, has three sites in Jacksonville, Fla., with 130 employees on the network.

When Perdue traded its ISDN lines six years ago for TelCoves service, not only did its connectivity speed increase but, in addition, calls for help to the IT department dropped by half, said Ryan Ecarius, manager of IT. However, the new 10G-bps Ethernet service is a little more than the furniture company needs.

“Increased speed would always be nice,” Ecarius said. “But, I dont know if it would be as cost-effective.”

The new offering will probably make the most sense for companies that currently use at least 500M-bps capacity, TelCoves Crossland said.
