New Ariba CEO

Ariba last week replaced CEO Larry Mueller after only three months. His predecessor, company co-founder Keith Krach, is taking back the reins as interim head of the business software company. Ariba predicted that sales for the current quarter will drop 50 percent from last year, and the company said it plans more layoffs.

Lots of Travel

Online travel site Orbitz debuted as the biggest e-commerce launch since 1999, with 2.1 million unique at-home visitors during June, according to data from Nielsen//NetRatings. Orbitz said last week that it has more than 1 million registered users, and its travel sales so far total more than $100 million.

PC Sales Drop

Worldwide PC sales fell in the second quarter for the first time in 15 years, according to Gartner Dataquest. In a report last week, the research firm said 30.4 million PCs shipped worldwide in the second quarter, 1.9 percent fewer than the same period last year. Its the first time since 1986 that the worldwide PC market showed negative growth, according to Dataquest.

Let the Tunes Begin

Napster can resume its song swapping service over the Internet, a federal appeals court ruled last week. The court overturned a lower courts ruling ordering Napster offline.

Another Bug

A new virus has been discovered that can fill up users hard drives, delete files, distribute private documents, hide itself from typical virus scanners and propagate itself across the Internet using the Microsoft Outlook address book. The virus, dubbed SirCam, usually comes as an e-mail attachment with the file name “SirCam32.exe.”
