Hewlett-Packard Heightens SAN Tape IQ

Hewlett-Packard Co. last week announced a new tape controller architecture that it said will help smarten up SAN-attached tape libraries. HP said its StorageWorks Extended Tape Library Architecture can significantly increase the IQ of tape backup systems, providing better scalability, security, and reliability. Unlike disk drives, which are generally attached to the network through intelligent controllers, tape has ordinarily linked directly into the SAN fabric. “This provides a level of intelligence in the library itself,” says Rick Luttrall, the director of near-line product marketing for HPs Network Storage Division. “You very rarely see a disk thats directly attached to the fabric. Theres always a controller. This is a similar concept but for tape.”

HP World Conference to See Serial SCSI Demo

Five tech companies will team up to demonstrate new serial disk technology at this weeks HP World conference. Adaptec Inc., Hewlett-Packard Co., Intel Corp., Maxtor Corp. and Seagate Technology LLC will showcase Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) technology at the Atlanta show, including the first 2.5- and 3.5-inch SAS disk drives and the first prototype SAS chip architected to run at 3Gbps and 6Gbps. The firms will also demonstrate the interoperability of Serial ATA (SATA) and SAS disk drives, a key selling point of the new serial technologies.

FireWire Direct Shipping The Ultra III 800 Hard Drive

FirewireDirect.com Inc. last week announced its Ultra III 800, the newest product in the companys Ultra Series of FireWire 3.5-inch desktop hard drive systems and the first in this line to employ the FireWire 800 data interface. The new Ultra III 800 uses the Oxford 922 FireWire 800 chip, and has a dual USB 2.0 and FireWire interface. The Ultra III 800 can hold up to 320GB.

Emulex Swings to Profit as Revenues Rise 16 Percent

Emulex Corp., maker of adapters used in data storage, last week said it posted a quarterly profit versus a year-ago loss as revenue rose 16 percent. The company said it had net income of $18.4 million, or 22 cents per share, for the fiscal fourth quarter ended June 29, compared with a loss of $11.4 million, or 14 cents per share, a year earlier. Revenue rose to $81.8 million from $70.2 million a year earlier.
