Google has unveiled the eagerly anticipated program interface that lets developers combine their work with Google’s new online calendar/day planner feature.

Details about the Google API are available by pointing a Web browser here. Google explains here that the API can be used to write computer programs to query, create, and update Google Calendar events, and make the updates available to other applications.

The goal, for Google, is to spark the same kind of combination, or mashup, of features that propelled Google Maps, Google’s mapping facet, to its prominent place in the Internet landscape.

Some ideas for Google Calendar combos are beginning to percolate.

For instance, those behind this restaurant finder seem to be at work adding an invitation and calendaring facet based on Google Calendar. There’s likely a lot more to come.
