Check Point Software Technologies announced Feb. 6 that it has launched a new line of unified threat management appliances, called UTM-1, designed to help medium-sized businesses and enterprises protect their networks from threats such as viruses and spyware.

The UTM-1, which comes in three customizable models, the 450, 1050 and 2050, includes an inspection firewall option that helps to secure a number of applications and protocols. UTM-1 also provides gateway anti-virus and anti-spyware features.

While each model includes a firewall, IP security for a VPN, an anti-virus feature, and an intrusion prevention feature designed to stop both network and application-layer threats, they differ in the number of users that they can serve. The UTM-1 450 can serve up to 250 users while the UTM-1 1050 and UTM-1 2050 models can serve up to 500 and 1000 users, respectively.

“Constantly changing threats and new security challenges make it harder and harder to keep an organizations network safe, but with UTM-1 appliances, customers now get comprehensive protection,” Laura Yecies, vice president of Check Point, based in Redwood City, Calif., told eWEEK.

The new security product line from Check Point also features Web filtering, which uses an extensive database of threat categories and associated URLs to attempt to prevent employees from abusing network resources through inappropriate Web browsing.

“The customers will benefit greatly from a platform that integrates the core security technologies for them and provides it in a format that is easy to deploy and manage,” Yecies said.

UTM-1 also provides security functions for various communication methods such as VOIP (voice over IP), instant messaging and peer-to-peer networks, while also featuring central policy management of multiple sites, automatic updates and IP Security for VPNs.

Yecies said UTM-1 can also benefit managed security providers by “delivering to them a comprehensive all-in-one security platform that can ensure that they are actively protected against new, evolving threats without the complexity often associated with a high level of security.”
