Lenovo, HP and Dell led the worldwide market for PC shipments, though the top three vendors also saw sizable drops in shipments as the overall market recorded a 9.5 percent decline from the second quarter of 2014, according to a Gartner research report.

In fact, all vendors in the top five saw a decline in shipments, with Lenovo, which boasts 19.7 percent market share, falling 6.8 percent. HP, with 17.4 percent market share, dropped 9.5 percent.

Dell, which has 14 percent of the market, fell nearly 5 percent, while the two companies rounding out the top five, Asus and Acer Group, fell 10.2 percent and 20.2 percent, respectively, compared with the same quarter last year.

Vendors outside the top five, represent 35.7 percent of the market, and saw more than a 10 percent decline in shipments.

Overall worldwide PC shipments totaled 68.4 million units in the second quarter of 2015. The report indicated the future doesn’t look promising, noting this was the steepest PC shipment decline since the third quarter of 2013. Gartner is projecting PC shipments will decline 4.4 percent in 2015.

In the U.S., HP maintained the top position for PC shipments in the second quarter of 2015 despite a 10.1 percent decline, while Dell narrowed the gap with HP compared with a year ago.

PC shipments I the U.S. totaled just over 15 million units in the second quarter of 2015, a 5.8 percent decline from the second quarter of 2014. This was led by a double-digit decline of desk-based shipments, which offset single-digit growth of mobile PCs.

Underscoring the precipitous nature of the drop in sales, the report noted the desk-based PC shipment decline was the steepest since 2009 when the market was hit by the economic crisis.

Lenovo was the only vendor showing year-over-year PC shipment growth among the top five vendors in the U.S, though those gains were tempered by double-digit shipment declines in Europe Middle East and Africa (EMEA), Latin America and Japan.

The EMEA region was also tough for HP, which saw a steep decline in the region, which the report noted was potentially due to the currency impact. Dell’s decline was relatively moderate in EMEA compared with Lenovo and HP.

In other emerging markets, Asia/Pacific PC shipments reached 24.2 million units in the second quarter of 2015, a 2.9 percent decline from the same period last year. Both desk-based and mobile PC shipments declined from the second quarter of 2014.

The report also noted PC shipments in China are estimated to have declined 4 percent in the quarter as demand for consumer PCs remained weak.
