With compliance issues forcing IT administrators to take data retention more seriously, WORM products are becoming increasingly prevalent. Quantums DLTIce allows IT managers to protect the integrity of their digital linear tape media without needing to invest in additional WORM technology.

The addition of WORM capabilities makes tape a practical medium for storage archiving because tapes can be stored for several years and have high capacity when compared with optical media.

Because DLTIce works with standard SuperDLT media, it wont force IT managers to buy separate tapes for WORM and standard backup chores. By contrast, storage rival Sonys WORM solution requires WORM tapes.

DLTIce, which became available last month, is now a standard feature that can be accessed using a firmware upgrade on current Quantum SDLT 600 drives and is free of charge.

Once a tape is protected with DLTIce, its contents can no longer be erased or rewritten, but data can be added if there is still blank space on the tape.

Quantum has integrated DLTIce with its DLTSage diagnostic software, allowing IT managers to keep track of time and date signatures and to verify that no one has tampered with the contents of a tape.

DLTIce puts an electronic key on the tape media to ensure its integrity. The unique identifier numbers provided by DLTIce cannot be tampered with, ensuring that IT managers can produce the original media in the event of an audit.

DLTIce is supported by many major ISVs, including Veritas, Computer Associates, Legato and IBM.
