EMC Drops Clariion Pricing

EMC this week announced enhancements to its entry-level Clariion CX200 line of networked storage systems. When it was launched last November, the CX200 was available only in dual-controller configurations, and had a list price of roughly $30,000. This week, single-controller CX200 systems will also be available. “That allows us to get much more aggressive from a pricing perspective,” EMC Senior Director of Clariion Mike Wytenus said. A $10,000 CX200 will hold about 100GB of storage, he said.

NetApp, AppIQ Partner to Integrate SAN and NAS Management

Network Appliance and AppIQ are developing an open interface based on the Storage Networking Industry Associations (SNIA) Storage Management Initiative Specification (SMI-S) to unify SAN and NAS storage management. “The efforts AppIQ and Network Appliance are making to propel the SMI-S are reflective of the overall industry support for this standard,” said John Webster, senior analyst and cofounder of Data Mobility Group. “By integrating the management of NAS and SAN through the implementation of the SMI-S, customers have the freedom to utilize both technologies and manage both through a single console.” The AppIQ Solution Suite will be the first to manage the Network Appliance unified storage platform through an SMI-S interface. The two companies are also partnering to drive the NAS implementation of SMI-S.

Iron Mountain Gets the Message

Iron Mountain, the company known for storing paper files deep in mines, this week said it will provide instant messaging support in its electronic archival outsourcing. Iron Mountain already archives and manages e-mail for companies. Those companies now can search for e-mail and IM data based on a persons e-mail address or IM address. Two weeks ago, the Securities and Exchange Commissions rule 17a-4 regarding archiving and retaining such records became official. Those requirements now include instant messaging and e-mail.

Multi-Layer DVD Holds 200 Films

Hitachi last week said it has developed technology to make DVDs with enough storage capacity to hold 400 hours of video. The latest technology involves stacking multiple data-storing layers. Conventional technologies so far allow only two layers in a DVD. The company aims to commercialize the technology in 2007.

IReady Unveils Integrated iSCSI Controller and Lineup of iSCSI HBAs

IReady Corp. this week announced a full lineup of iSCSI products, featuring a fully integrated iSCSI controller and iSCSI host bus adaptors (HBAs)—at less than half the price of competing solutions, the company said. The iReady HBA product family includes three product offerings: the IR-1011LC iSCSI Storage Adapter, the IR-1011C Secure Storage Adapter, and the IR-1011F Secure Storage Adapter for optical networks.
