Microsofts Mobile Information 2001 Server provides a promising framework for developing mobile applications such as the Outlook Mobile Access application that ships with the product. Although Mobile Information Server does a good job of extending the availability of Exchange data to WAP devices, the limitations of WAP may leave companies looking elsewhere for a mobile messaging solution.

SHORT-TERM BUSINESS IMPACT // Mobile Information Server is relatively easy to set up—administrators can quickly give mobile workers access to Exchange data.

LONG-TERM BUSINESS IMPACT // Over time, companies that deploy Mobile Information Server will perhaps derive the most dramatic benefits from custom-developed data access applications.

Generates notifications from Exchange mailbox; straightforward setup.

Works only with WAP; Outlook Mobile Access supports only Exchange.
