If youre going to have standards, youre going to need a way to manage them. To do that, WebMethods Inc. and Hewlett-Packard Co. have unveiled Open Management Interface Version 1.0.

The OMI specification defines standards using XML, Simple Object Access Protocol and HTTP.

OMI will enable customers to use systems management tools to manage and monitor business processes, Web services and the underlying integration infrastructure that drives their business, according to WebMethods officials in Fairfax, Va.

The OMI specification will enable HP OpenView users to manage the WebMethods integration platform from the same management console used in managing other IT resources, such as networks, systems, storage, applications and databases.

Should a process fail to work—for example, a purchase order is delayed—a company using OMI can figure out if the error is due to a downed system or a breakdown in the business process itself.

WebMethods and HP, of Palo Alto, Calif., plan to deliver OMI-based versions of their products in early summer. Businesses can download the specification at either company Web site.
