Polycom penned a multi-year agreement Oct. 27 with Alabama-based Digium to develop and combine SIP-based telephony solutions for small to medium-sized businesses that are looking to strengthen their telephony capabilities.

Pleasanton, Calif.-based Polycoms Session Initiated Protocol desktops and conference phones will be put together with Digiums Asterisk Business Edition, an open-source PBX (Private Pranch Exchange), to provide small businesses with the ability to retrieve improved telephony solutions.

“We look forward to expanding our offering and furthering our reach in the marketplace through this partnership with Polycom,” said Mark Spencer, president and CEO at Digium, in a company statement.

With the agreement, Polycom is working with Digium to bring high-definition voice sound quality to Polycom SIP-based desktop phones, which would give users a clearer sound and would allow them to better interpret the information being given to them.

The agreement will also allow small businesses to command, customize and organize options featured in the SIP phone.

“The interoperability between Asterisk Business Edition and Polycom SIP phones ensures flexibility and broad support for Asterisk telephony features,” said Spencer in the same statement.

The agreement defines that Digium will adjust the Asterisk GUI (graphic user interface), the Asterisk Business Edition application and Asterisk OS to incorporate with Polycoms SIP-based desktop and conference phones, which will allow for sophisticated telephony features such as shared line appearance and XML microbrowser plug-ins.

“Through our co-development agreement, Polycom SIP phones will be easy to deploy and manage in a Digium Asterisk Business Edition environment and support the business telephony features to meet the needs of the SMB market,” said Sunil Bhalla, senior vice president and general manager of voice communications at Polycom, in a company statement.
