IBM on Thursday introduced a lightweight notebook computer that weighs 3.6 pounds and can last up to eight hours at a time when equipped with an optional second battery.

The ThinkPad X30 is an “ultraportable” notebook designed to hold two batteries at the same time and manage power consumption between both of them. It also analyzes how much power is needed to perform a task and reduces power accordingly.

The ThinkPad X30 comes standard with IBMs Access Connections wizard, which manages both wired and wireless connections and makes it easier to switch from one connection port to another.

It also includes Rapid Restore PC, a one-button disaster recovery system that restores previously-saved data after an operating system crash.

Wireless capabilities in the notebook include built-in support for WiFi (802.11b) wireless LAN technology and out-of-the-box support for the 802.1x Extensible Authentication Protocol standard, as well as support for Bluetooth personal area networks. It also includes a FireWire port for peripheral devices.

The ThinkPad X30 will be generally available Sept. 3, with prices starting at $1,999.
